Custom Enclosures for Different Applications

Designed around what goes inside.

A housing must do more than contain its components. It needs to position internal parts, connect to surrounding equipment and provide the access, protection and appearance required by the application.

GPT Precision manufactures custom enclosure components for a range of electronic, industrial and mechanical assemblies.

Engineering Requirements That Shape the Enclosure

Fit, protection and performance begin with the details.

The manufacturing approach depends on the enclosure's intended function and the relationships between its components.

Five areas deserve particular attention during drawing and manufacturing review.

Assembly Fit & Interfaces

Mounting holes, locating surfaces, connector positions and cover interfaces determine how an enclosure fits into the final assembly.

Define critical dimensions, datum references and clearance requirements around the actual mating components.

Features requiring precise alignment may need controlled machining operations and specific dimensional inspection.

Mechanical Strength & Protection

Wall thickness, unsupported spans, corners, fastener positions and local reinforcements affect structural behavior.

A machined aluminum housing, a formed sheet metal chassis and an injection-molded plastic enclosure require different approaches to stiffness and load support.

The intended loads and installation conditions help establish suitable construction details.

Thermal Management

Heat sources, contact surfaces, airflow paths and operating temperatures influence enclosure material and geometry.

Metal housings can contribute to heat conduction, while ventilation openings or separate cooling components may be required by the assembly.

Specify critical thermal interfaces where their dimensions or surface conditions affect manufacturing.

EMI Shielding & Grounding

Conductive enclosure materials may contribute to electromagnetic shielding, but the assembled result also depends on seams, openings, cable entries and electrical continuity.

Where EMI performance matters, identify conductive contact areas, grounding points and any requirements for masking insulating finishes.

Shielding performance requires an appropriate assembly-level verification method; enclosure material alone does not establish compliance.

Sealing & Ingress Protection

Enclosures exposed to dust, water or other environmental conditions may require defined sealing interfaces.

Gasket grooves, mating-face flatness, surface finish, fastener spacing and cable entry details all affect the assembled seal.

Specify the target IP rating and relevant conditions where applicable. Manufacturing can be planned around these requirements, but any claimed rating requires appropriate validation of the completed assembly.

Manufacturing Options for Custom Enclosures

Different processes. Different advantages.

The best manufacturing route depends on enclosure geometry, 材料, critical features and expected demand.

GPT Precision supports drawing-based manufacturing projects using suitable machining, fabrication, molding and prototyping processes.

CNC Machining

Precision housings with defined functional interfaces.

CNC milling and turning can produce custom metal and engineering-plastic housings with controlled mounting faces, pockets, bores, threaded features and connector openings.

Best suited for: Precision enclosures, prototypes, complex machined components and production designs where critical interfaces justify machining.

Consider: Deep cavities, thin walls, machining access, setup requirements and material removal.

钣金制造

Efficient construction for panels and chassis.

Laser cutting, forming, bending and joining can produce enclosure parts from metal sheet without requiring injection or die-casting molds.

Best suited for: Equipment chassis, protective covers, control panels and larger thin-wall enclosures.

Consider: Bend radii, corner reliefs, panel joints, fastening hardware and accumulated assembly tolerances.

3D Printing

Explore geometry before committing to tooling.

Additive manufacturing can produce enclosure prototypes with complex internal features, allowing teams to examine external form, component placement and assembly access.

Best suited for: Concept validation, packaging studies, fit checks and selected functional prototypes.

Consider: Process-specific material properties, build orientation, surface condition and dimensional behavior.

Printed parts do not automatically represent the performance of production-molded components.

Vacuum Casting

Repeatable sample builds before production tooling.

Vacuum casting can produce short runs of polyurethane enclosure components using suitable master patterns and molds.

Best suited for: Appearance samples, assembly evaluation and pilot quantities where production tooling is not yet justified.

Consider: Mold life, geometry, dimensional consistency and the properties of the selected polyurethane system.

Cast polyurethane may approximate certain characteristics of production plastics but is not an identical material substitute.

注塑成型

Integrated plastic features for repeat production.

Custom injection molding enables plastic housings with molded ribs, bosses, snap-fits and surface details.

Best suited for: Plastic enclosure programs with sufficiently stable designs and production demand to justify tooling.

Consider: Tooling investment, draft, wall transitions, shrinkage, gate locations and parting lines.

Mold design, material grade and part acceptance requirements are established together before production release.

压铸

A production option for suitable metal enclosure designs.

Die casting may be considered for aluminum or zinc-alloy housings where geometry and expected demand support dedicated tooling.

Critical mating faces, bores, mounting holes and threaded features may require secondary CNC machining.

Best suited for: Repeat metal production with appropriate casting geometry and tooling economics.

Consider: Draft, ejection, wall construction, porosity, tooling costs and secondary machining.

Die-casting suitability and any special sealing requirements are evaluated for the specific project.

Choose the Process Around the Finished Part

A prototype may be manufactured by CNC machining or 3D printing while its production version uses injection molding or another process.

The important comparison is not quantity alone. Evaluate tooling cost, material properties, functional tolerances, surface requirements and expected production demand together.

Discuss Your Manufacturing Options

Materials & Surface Finishing

Match the material to the application—not just the shape.

Material choice affects structural behavior, weight, thermal performance, electrical characteristics, surface treatment and manufacturing cost.

Metal Housings

Common options include aluminum alloys, stainless steel and specified carbon steels.

Aluminum is frequently considered for its machinability, relatively low weight and thermal conductivity. Stainless steel may be appropriate where corrosion resistance or particular mechanical properties are important.

The specific alloy, temper or material condition must match the intended manufacturing process and operating environment.

Plastic Housings

Depending on the application and process, material options may include ABS, polycarbonate (PC), POM, nylon and other engineering plastics.

Material selection should account for operating temperature, impact requirements, chemical exposure, dimensional stability, appearance and any specified flame-performance requirements.

Not every material grade is suitable for every manufacturing method.

Finishing for Appearance and Function

Depending on the material and project requirements, finishing options may include:

  • 阳极氧化
  • Bead blasting
  • Brushing and polishing
  • Plating
  • Passivation
  • Other specified and technically suitable treatments

Visible surfaces, corrosion exposure, dimensional fits and electrical contacts should be considered before selecting the finish.

Anodized or otherwise insulated surfaces may require masking or specific bonding provisions where electrical continuity is necessary.

Finish thickness and surface texture may also affect sealing faces, threaded features and tight-fitting components.

制造 & Quality Control

Critical features deserve a controlled manufacturing approach.

A functional enclosure depends on more than the accuracy of individual dimensions. Mounting locations, mating faces, covers and hardware must work together in the finished assembly.

GPT Precision combines drawing review, process planning and dimensional inspection to support the required part specifications.

Drawing & Datum Review

We assess customer drawings to identify critical dimensions, reference datums, mating interfaces and features requiring particular attention during manufacturing.

Clearly defined tolerances and acceptance requirements help focus process planning and inspection on the features that matter.

Process & Fixture Planning

Machining sequence, workholding, tool access and secondary operations influence dimensional relationships across the part.

For multi-face housings, setup planning helps maintain the required relationships between mounting surfaces, hole patterns and other functional features.

For sheet metal or molded components, the relevant forming or tooling constraints are considered during process planning.

Sample & First-Article Review

Where required by the project, samples and first-article inspection provide an opportunity to confirm critical dimensions, fit and specified surface requirements before repeat production.

Approved changes are incorporated into controlled drawing revisions and associated manufacturing requirements.

Dimensional & Visual Inspection

Inspection is planned around the drawing and the agreed acceptance criteria.

Depending on the features and inspection scope, checks may include:

  • Overall dimensions and critical tolerances
  • Hole positions and mounting relationships
  • Flatness and other specified geometric requirements
  • Threaded and mating features
  • Surface finish and cosmetic condition

CMM and other suitable measuring methods may be applied according to feature geometry and inspection requirements.

Customer-defined assembly checks or separate performance tests can be included in the project specification where agreed.

From Prototype to Repeat Production

Carry proven design requirements into the next build.

An enclosure project may begin with a single prototype and progress through sample approval to repeat production.

Each stage helps resolve different manufacturing questions.

Prototype & Fit Check

Build the components needed to evaluate overall geometry, mounting positions, connector access and assembly sequence.

Identify which features the prototype represents and which material or performance requirements remain unverified.

Sample Approval

Confirm critical dimensions, material selection, surface treatment, fastening details and required inspection criteria.

Record agreed changes in the current drawing and manufacturing specification before the next production stage.

Repeat Production

Apply the approved requirements through the selected manufacturing process, with appropriate process controls and inspection.

Where the material or manufacturing route changes, reassess process-dependent tolerances, surface properties and functional performance.
