Custom 3D Printed Anatomical Models

Turn approved anatomical geometry into physical models for training, visualization and bench evaluation.

GPT Precision supports custom anatomical model manufacturing, with 3D printing processes selected around your geometry, material and handling requirements.

From delicate bone structures and internal channels to sectional and assembled models, we review manufacturability, finishing and inspection requirements around the features your team needs to preserve.

Physical anatomical models only. Patient-specific clinical applications require separate scope and quality review. Implants, surgical guides and in-vivo devices are outside this manufacturing scope.

What Will Your Anatomical Model Be Used For?

Different applications call for different levels of detail, material properties and model construction.

A physical anatomical model provides a shared reference for understanding structures, explaining spatial relationships and evaluating geometric interfaces.

Start with the task the model needs to support. Its intended use helps determine which features must be reproduced, how the model will be handled and what acceptance requirements should be established.

Medical Education & Training

Make anatomical structures easier to demonstrate and understand.

Create physical models for classroom instruction, demonstrations and repeatable training exercises.

Models may represent selected anatomical regions, enlarged details or removable sections. Teaching sets can be manufactured from an approved revision to support consistent instruction.

Specify whether the model will be viewed, handled, assembled or used for a defined hands-on activity.

Device Fit & Access Evaluation

Evaluate geometric relationships before the next development stage.

Use anatomical models to assess instrument approach angles, access paths, clearances and geometric fit during bench evaluation.

Identify the interfaces, contact regions and critical dimensions the model must represent.

These checks can support product development but do not, by themselves, establish formal medical-device verification or tissue-equivalent performance.

Anatomical Visualization & Communication

Make complex spatial relationships easier to communicate.

Sectioned, enlarged, transparent or color-coded models can help explain anatomical structures that are difficult to interpret from two-dimensional views alone.

Define the intended audience, viewing requirements and any acceptable simplifications.

Models intended for patient-care communication require appropriate review by the responsible clinical team.

Patient-Specific Planning Enquiries

Discuss physical models based on approved patient-specific geometry.

Patient-specific models may support spatial review and discussion of a proposed clinical approach.

Before accepting a project, the intended use, source-data approval, clinical responsibilities, data-handling arrangements and applicable quality requirements must be confirmed separately.

Manufacturing review does not replace anatomical approval or clinical assessment.

Design Around Critical Anatomy

Preserve the details that matter while planning for practical manufacturing.

An anatomical model must do more than reproduce the overall shape of a digital file.

Fine features, enclosed passages, section joints and material requirements can influence print orientation, structural integrity, finishing and inspection.

GPT Precision reviews these considerations against the approved geometry and intended use to help define an appropriate manufacturing approach.

Thin Walls & Fine Anatomy

Thin Walls & Fine Anatomy

Thin bone structures, small vessels and delicate projections can challenge both printability and handling.

Review critical feature sizes, build orientation, support strategy and post-processing access for the selected process.

Where reinforcement, enlargement or simplification is necessary, the proposed changes should be agreed with the responsible model reviewer before manufacturing.

Internal Channels & Cavities

Internal Channels & Cavities

Hollow structures and narrow passages require a practical way to remove residual printing materials.

Depending on the process, enclosed regions may retain uncured resin, support material or loose powder.

Evaluate openings, wall thickness, cleaning access and whether sectional construction would make the internal geometry easier to manufacture and inspect.

Sectioning & Assembly

Sectioning & Assembly

Large or complex models may benefit from being manufactured in multiple sections.

Plan split lines, locating features, joining methods and mounting points around the anatomical structures that must remain visible and correctly aligned.

For detachable models, define joint clearances, assembly fit and the expected frequency of assembly and disassembly.

Color, Transparency & Material Response

Color, Transparency & Material Response

Color coding can distinguish anatomical regions, while transparent or translucent materials may help reveal selected internal structures.

Rigidity and flexibility may also influence the printing process and model construction.

Specify visual appearance and mechanical behavior separately. Transparency or material softness does not, by itself, establish biological or mechanical tissue equivalence.

From Approved Geometry to a Finished Model

Keep the approved reference, manufacturing plan and inspection requirements connected throughout the project.

A coordinated workflow helps identify manufacturing limitations early and ensures that the finished model can be evaluated against an agreed reference.

01 — File Review

Establish the manufacturing reference.

Review the supplied STL or other agreed 3D geometry for units, scale, revision, mesh integrity and critical anatomical features.

Any proposed repair, smoothing or modification affecting anatomical geometry must be approved by the responsible content reviewer.

If only DICOM imaging is available, segmentation responsibilities and service scope are confirmed separately.

02 — Build Planning

Match the process to the model requirements.

Assess build orientation, supports, internal access and sectional construction.

Confirm the selected material, joining features, surface finish and manufacturing file revision.

For teaching sets or repeat orders, define sample approval requirements where appropriate before further production.

03 — Printing & Finishing

Manufacture to the agreed build definition.

Produce the model using the selected printing process and complete the specified post-processing operations.

Depending on the process and project, these may include support removal, cleaning, curing, surface finishing and assembly.

Finishing methods are reviewed where they could alter critical features, dimensions or visible anatomical details.

04 — Inspection & Delivery

Verify the agreed features before release.

Check selected dimensions, visible structures, assembly alignment and surface condition against the approved manufacturing reference.

Confirm the inspection methods, acceptance criteria and required records for the project.

Model identification, revision information, packaging and handling instructions are included as specified.

Compare 3D Printing Processes

Choose the process around the model—not simply the technology name.

Fine anatomical detail, internal geometry, optical clarity, material properties and repeated handling place different demands on the manufacturing process.

The following comparison outlines general process characteristics. Actual equipment, materials and achievable results are confirmed during project review.

Process Key Characteristics When to Consider It Review Before Selection
PolyJet Certain systems support multiple colors, materials and rigidity combinations. Multi-structure visualization and models requiring distinct rigid and flexible regions. Available material combinations, transparency, support access and required mechanical response.
SLA Fine detail, smooth surfaces and selected clear or translucent resin options. Detailed anatomy, sectional models and applications requiring selected transparent features. Support marks, internal cleaning, post-curing, wall thickness and finishing for optical clarity.
SLS Nylon-based printing suitable for complex geometries and models requiring handling durability. Skeletal representations, complex structures and detachable educational models. Powder evacuation, surface texture, delicate features and small enclosed passages.
FDM Thermoplastic extrusion suited to straightforward geometries and larger forms. Large teaching models and basic spatial references where very fine surface detail is less critical. Layer lines, build orientation, directional mechanical behavior, feature-size limits and support removal.

Match the Process to Your Priorities

A printing process suited to a detailed visual model may not be the best choice for repeated mechanical handling or a defined bench-testing task.

Consider the features that must remain intact, the accessibility of internal structures, required appearance, material behavior and expected quantity.

GPT Precision reviews the available manufacturing options against these priorities before confirming the project scope.

Accuracy Depends on the Entire Workflow

Accurate printing begins with an approved reference—but printing accuracy alone does not establish anatomical accuracy.

Source imaging, digital processing, manufacturing and intended use each contribute to the suitability of the finished model.

Three distinct areas should be considered.

Anatomical Fidelity

Does the approved geometry represent the intended anatomy?

Image quality, segmentation, smoothing, scaling and digital processing can influence anatomical representation.

The responsible content or clinical reviewer approves the geometry and any modifications before manufacturing release.

Anatomical interpretation and approval remain with the designated reviewer.

Manufacturing Accuracy

Does the physical model match the approved manufacturing geometry?

Compare selected dimensions, anatomical landmarks, mating interfaces and assembly alignment against the approved manufacturing file.

Define inspection methods, acceptance criteria and required records according to the model's geometry and intended use.

Printer resolution, layer height or a general process tolerance should not be treated as proof of overall anatomical accuracy.

Functional Suitability

Can the model support its intended handling or evaluation task?

A visual demonstration model may require different material and structural characteristics from one intended for repeated assembly, cutting, drilling or loading.

Assess the selected material, build orientation, wall thickness, joints and finishing against the planned activity.

Where cleaning compatibility, mechanical behavior or tissue-like response is important, project-specific requirements and supporting evidence must be established.

Define What Will Be Checked

For example, a sectional bone model may require inspection of selected landmark distances, section alignment, mating interfaces, assembly fit and visible surface features.

Inspection methods and acceptance limits are agreed against the approved manufacturing reference.

The checks depend on the model and intended use rather than a single universal inspection specification.

Anatomical Model Questions

Can you work from DICOM scans?

DICOM imaging generally requires segmentation and conversion into suitable 3D geometry before printing.

If you already have an approved print-ready STL or other agreed model file, we can review it for manufacturing.

If only DICOM data is available, describe the imaging and intended use without sending identifiable patient information. Segmentation availability, responsibilities, clinical approval and data transfer must be confirmed separately.

Can one model combine rigid and flexible regions?

Certain PolyJet systems can produce models with different material properties within the same build.

The available equipment, material combinations and proposed construction must be reviewed for the specific project.

Different hardnesses do not automatically reproduce the mechanical behavior of biological tissue.

Can anatomical models be cut, drilled or repeatedly assembled?

These activities may be considered when the material and model construction are suitable.

Specify the intended operation, tools, expected loads and handling frequency.

Material properties, build orientation, thin features and joint design can affect performance. A visual model is not automatically suitable for mechanical testing or tissue simulation.

Can the models be cleaned, disinfected or sterilized?

Compatibility depends on the selected material, post-processing condition, finish, assembly and proposed treatment method.

Provide the intended chemicals, temperature, exposure conditions and repeat-cycle requirements.

Suitability must be evaluated for the specific configuration. No general disinfection or sterilization compatibility is assumed.

How is anatomical model accuracy controlled?

Accuracy is evaluated against defined responsibilities and an approved reference.

The responsible reviewer confirms the anatomical source geometry and any digital modifications.

Manufacturing inspection then evaluates agreed dimensions, visible features and assembly requirements against the approved manufacturing file.

Acceptance criteria and inspection records are established according to the project.

Do anatomical models replace clinical review or medical-device verification?

编号.

Physical models may support visualization, education or defined development activities, but their manufacture does not establish clinical suitability or complete formal medical-device verification.

Anatomical approval, clinical decisions and applicable verification responsibilities remain with the appropriate project and clinical teams.

Implants, surgical guides and in-vivo devices are outside the scope described on this page.
