A Manufacturing Route Built Around Your Part

The process sequence matters as much as the individual operation.

Turning establishes rotational features; milling creates flats, pockets and off-axis details. Grinding can address tighter dimensional, geometric or surface requirements where appropriate.

We evaluate material condition, workholding, machining access and datum relationships to establish the sequence. When multiple setups are required, workholding and datum transfer are planned to maintain the dimensional relationships specified on the drawing. Multiple processes do not necessarily mean a single setup.

Part FeaturesManufacturing Approach
Turned diameters with milled featuresCoordinate turning and milling for flats, slots, cross-holes and off-axis details. Plan workholding and datum transfer to maintain their relationship to the turned features.
Housings with precision boresSequence bore machining and finishing around mating diameters, positional tolerances, mounting faces and assembly access.
Features requiring precision grindingEvaluate dimensional tolerance, geometric accuracy, surface roughness and material condition separately to identify where grinding adds value.
Deep holes and intersecting passagesAssess depth-to-diameter ratio, tool access, internal burr removal and inspection access. Cleaning, pressure testing and leak testing require separate scope confirmation.
Hardened tooling and wear componentsCoordinate machining, heat treatment and final finishing, allowing for material movement and dimensions specified in the hardened condition.

The objective is not to use more processes, but to achieve the specified features in their required finished condition.

Materials for Custom Machined Metal Parts

Select the grade, condition and manufacturing route together.

Material choice affects strength, weight, corrosion, wear and processing. The specific grade and condition guide cutting strategy, distortion control and finishing.

Material FamilySelection and Manufacturing Considerations
Aluminum AlloysWeight and strength needs, machining stability and compatibility with the specified anodized finish
Stainless SteelsCorrosion resistance, mechanical properties, cutting behavior and final surface condition
Carbon & Alloy SteelsStrength, wear resistance, heat-treatment response and dimensional stability
Copper, Brass & BronzeConductivity or bearing properties, machinability and surface requirements, depending on the alloy
Titanium AlloysStrength-to-weight needs, corrosion resistance, tool access and machining strategy
Tool Steels & Specialty AlloysHardness, wear, supply condition and the sequence of machining, treatment and finishing

Specify the exact grade, material standard, supply condition and required hardness. For heat-treated components, state when the properties apply and which dimensions must be maintained after treatment. This helps establish machining allowances and the final finishing sequence.

Availability, sourcing and suitability are confirmed for the selected grade. If alternatives are acceptable, identify the mechanical, chemical or functional properties that must remain unchanged; similar material names alone do not establish equivalence.

Critical Dimensions, Fit & Инспекция

Define what each feature controls—and how it will be checked.

Shaft runout, housing bore position and base-plate flatness each serve different assembly needs. Define their reference features and acceptance criteria to guide manufacturing and inspection.

Dimensions & Fits

Mating diameters, bores, threads, shoulders and clearances determine how components locate, connect or move. Identify bearing fits, sealing interfaces and alignment features explicitly. Where general tolerances apply, identify the relevant standard and tolerance class. Specify individual limits wherever general tolerances do not adequately define a critical feature.

Geometric Accuracy & Datums

Geometric tolerances control characteristics that size tolerances alone cannot fully define. Flatness, circularity and cylindricity address feature form, while parallelism, perpendicularity, position and runout control orientation, location or variation relative to specified references, as applicable.

Functional datums help establish how critical features are related and verified. Manufacturing setups and inspection methods are planned around the drawing's specified controls.

Surface Roughness & Functional Surfaces

Specify roughness separately from size and geometry. Bearing seats, sliding interfaces and sealing faces can need different surface conditions. Identify the relevant values, measurement requirements and any texture or lay direction that matters; distinguish these functional requirements from cosmetic appearance.

Инспекция & Acceptance

Match the inspection method to the feature and tolerance. Verification can include CMM inspection, optical measurement, dimensional gauges or dedicated fixtures. Agree sampling, first-article checks, reporting and supporting documents during quotation; the method and coverage are not automatically identical for every part.

Surface Finishing & Heat Treatment

Plan for the delivered surface and material condition.

Define finishing and heat treatment before fixing the manufacturing sequence: they affect appearance, corrosion, wear and the dimensions of close-fitting interfaces.

Поверхностная обработка & Coatings

Options include anodizing, chemical conversion coating, passivation, electroplating, powder coating and painting, subject to material compatibility. Specify coating thickness, preparation, masking and appearance. Threads, bearing seats and electrical contact areas need particular attention when treatment changes their fit or function.

Mechanical Surface Finishing

Blasting, brushing and polishing provide surface preparation, texture or appearance. Identify cosmetic areas separately from functional surfaces, and state which edges or features must be protected. The finishing method should preserve the specified dimensions and surface characteristics.

Heat Treatment & Hardness

Specify the material, treatment standard, required hardness and dimensions controlled after treatment. Potential movement influences machining allowances and whether final machining or grinding follows heat treatment. Inspection should address the agreed finished condition.

From First Samples to Repeat Production

Clear specifications connect development, production and ongoing supply.

Drawing revision, material and acceptance criteria establish the reference for each order. Prototype, batch and repeat orders have different objectives and approval needs.

Prototypes & Initial Samples

Validate fit, function and critical design details.

Define what the sample must demonstrate—assembly fit, movement, sealing, appearance or another characteristic. Identify any material, finish or inspection differences from the intended production part so the evaluation reflects those limitations.

Production Batches

Manufacture against approved specifications and agreed inspection criteria.

Establish quantities, process sequence, acceptance checks and delivery needs. Include first-article inspection or sample approval where required. Any deviations affecting the approved requirements must be resolved or formally accepted by the customer before the relevant production release.

Repeat Orders & Engineering Changes

Maintain revision control and evaluate changes before subsequent production.

Use the approved drawing, материал, finish and acceptance criteria as the reference. Changes to geometry, материал, tooling, process or finishing are assessed for their effect on fit, manufacture and verification; additional validation is agreed where needed.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Is my part better suited to machining or sheet metal fabrication?

Machining suits solid components with bores, pockets and controlled assembly interfaces. Sheet metal fabrication suits panels, covers and formed parts made from sheet. Some components combine both. The choice depends on geometry, материал, quantity and function, including which surfaces or interfaces require subsequent machining.

Can you manufacture metal grades that are not listed?

Send the exact grade, material standard and required supply condition or hardness. We assess sourcing, machinability and any special processing needs before confirming the scope. If substitutions are acceptable, state the properties that must be preserved so an alternative can be evaluated against the same criteria.

Can I request a quote with only a 3D model?

Yes. Send the model, intended application and known specifications. A dimensioned drawing is recommended for critical fits, datums, threads and surface finishes. Any information the model does not define—including material and acceptance criteria—must be clarified before manufacture. Flag open design decisions when submitting the enquiry.

Can a single part require turning, milling and grinding?

Yes. Several operations can be needed to produce the geometry, fits and surface condition. The sequence depends on material, workholding, tool access and critical feature relationships. We establish the route for the individual drawing.

Can you provide material certificates and inspection reports?

Include the documents, standards and reporting formats you need with the enquiry. Material certificates, dimensional reports and traceability arrangements are confirmed during quotation, together with inspection coverage.

Can you quote prototype and production quantities together?

Yes. Provide initial sample quantities, planned batch sizes and expected repeat demand. Identify differences in material, finish, inspection or documentation between stages. This allows quotations to distinguish one-time preparation from recurring production work and compare the requested quantities against a clearly defined supply scope.
